Haryana Police registers case 5.5 years after youth's suicide, family alleges delay and inaction

JIND: Haryana police has finally registered a case in Safidon town of Jind district, five and a half years after the suicide of Montu Sharma on April 13, 2018.

The youth's family had approached the Sadar police station immediately after the incident, providing a suicide note alleging harassment by individuals including Shankar Dass, Neelam Rani, Girish Kumar, and Om Prakash. However, the police did not register an FIR at that time.

Subsequently, when the deceased's family found the suicide note in his almirah during a search, they handed it over to Safidon police, who failed to take action. Sources cite a shortage of staff at the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) lab as a cause for delays in preparing reports, affecting the timely functioning at the state level.

After a delay of five and a half years, the police sent the letter for investigation to an FSL lab in Madhuban town of Karnal district, where the writing was finally matched. Following confirmation from FSL, the police lodged a case against the accused under sections 306 (Abetment of suicide), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 34 (common intention) and initiated a probe.

Gorav Sharma, the deceased's brother, alleged that the police did not act promptly despite the submission of a suicide note. He claimed that the accused had fabricated a document showing a pending amount of Rs 38 lakh and had threatened to forcibly take possession of their shop. The delay in police action led to his brother's tragic suicide, according to Sharma.

Police officials are now investigating the reasons behind the delayed registration of the case."
