CHANDIGARH: Reeman Nain, a 24-year-old farm activist from Khedar village in Haryana's Hisar district, is fighting a battle whose end is nowhere in sight and faces three criminal cases.
As she stands with other farmers in the fight for repeal of farm laws, the young woman, whose family owns two acres of agricultural land, has been slapped with charges of attempt to murder, causing obstruction in the discharge of official duty of government servant and assualt for taking part in the protests.
Undeterred Reeman continues to lead from the front at Badopatti toll plaza on Hisar-Chandigarh National highway.
A popular face at the protests, Reeman has shared stage with leaders of Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) during the kisan panchayat at New Delhi, SKM mahapanchayat in Muzaffarnagar as well as other farmer rallies.
She is determined to save the farmlands and to strengthen the farming community. Enrolled in MA Hindi at Maharishi Dayanand University (MDU), Rohtak, Reeman has been actively involved in various farm protest sites for the past eight months.
“Why should I stay back at home when our brothers, uncles and elders are sitting at Tikri, Singhu, Jind and other toll plazas. Now we know what police action is... but we are certainly not going back,” she said.
Reeman admits that initially her family was not happy about her taking part in the agitation but once they realised how much respect she was accorded at the agitation site, they let her have her way.
“We are rural folk. Every father is worried about his daughter. So was my father. People here treat me like their daughter and sister,” she said.
Vikas Sisar, who is part of the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha, and social activist Yogendra Yadav are full of praise for her. “She represents the young generation of farmers. Activists like her make us believe that our efforts will not go to waste,” said Sisar.
