Haryana: Four of family booked for dowry death in Ambala

AMBALA: The police have registered a case of dowry death against four members of a family in Saha of Ambala district on Saturday.

As per the information, Pooja, who was married to a man at Mithapur village in Saha area of Ambala, "hanged herself" on Saturday, allegedly due to harassment "for dowry" by her in-laws.

On the complaint of Pooja's mother, Rekha Bawa of Gandhi Nagar, Yamunanagar, the Ambala police have booked four members of a family, in-laws of deceased woman including husband, under Section 34 (common intention) and 304-B (dowry death) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Saha police station on Saturday.

Saha police station house officer (SHO) inspector Yashdeep Singh said, "Pooja ended her life by hanging on Saturday and on Sunday, her post-mortem was conducted. The dead body was handed over to her family members, who performed the last rites at Yamunanagar. So far, no arrests have been made and the investigation is being done."

Pooja's mother Rekha said that her daughter was married to a man of Mithapur village in April 2020 and that her in-laws were not satisfied with dowry that they had given.

"Pooja's in-laws started demanding dowry and they left her at our house (maternal). In May 2021, Pooja gave birth to a baby boy and her husband demanded Rs 1 lakh, and we gave them Rs 50,000 after collecting from our relatives. For some time, her in-laws lived at peace with Pooja and later, they again started harassing for dowry. Pooja's husband again left her at our home in September, and demanded Rs 1 lakh", said Rekha.

The complainant said she again arranged Rs 50,000 from her brother and sent Pooja to her in-laws house with cash.

"On Saturday, at 9.45 am, I received a call from Pooja that her in-laws are demanding Rs 50,000 and that they are misbehaving with her. Later, she ended her life by hanging with a fan at her in-laws house", alleged Rekha.
