Haryana: Beaten by in-laws, man dies in police custody

KARNAL: A 32-year-old man, who was arrested by the police for allegedly harassing his wife for dowry (498A of IPC), reportedly died under mysterious circumstances in police custody in Karnal district.

The deceased has been identified as Vikas, a resident of Karan Vihar in the city.

The family members of the deceased blamed the kin of the girl, whom he got married in the court around 2 months ago, for the death as they were also against this marriage.

They alleged that Vikash died due to the injuries as he was severely beaten by his in-law’s before handing over to the police.

On the complaint of the deceased family members, police have booked four persons (in-laws) on the charges of murder.

Police said that in August this year, the family members of the girl registered a case against Vikash under sections 363 and 365. Later, they got married in court. On October 3, Woman police station Karnal booked Vikas under section 498A of IPC on the complaint of his wife.

It is alleged that on October 9 night, Vikas reached Karan vihar where his in laws allegedly beat up him. Soon after getting the information police team reached the spot and lodged him in the lock-up at Sadar police station.

Police said that suddenly Vikas’s health deteriorated in police custody and he was rushed to the hospital, where the doctor declared him dead.

The family members alleged that despite having injuries, police lodged him in the lock-up instead of getting him admitted in the hospital. It was negligence on the part of the police.

Karnal SP Ganga Ram Punia said,” Police arrested him after a medical examination. Suddenly, his health deteriorated in police custody and he was again taken to the hospital, where the doctor declared him dead. Now, we have registered an FIR under the section of murder on the complaint of victim’s family members against his wife’s father, mother, brother and maternal uncle. "

As per the law, judicial inquiry will be conducted into the matter. The body has been handed over after the post-mortem conducted by a board of doctors under videography. The cause of death could be ascertained in the post-mortem report. The investigation is on, the SP added.
