Harveys to enter administration as thousands of jobs put at risk

Furniture retail giant Harveys is the latest store to go into administration during the coronavirus pandemic.

Thousands of jobs are at risk across the UK, with the retailer having a number of units in the Greater Glasgow area.

In an email to employees, Blue Group CEO Mark Jackson said the decision had been made with "heartfelt regret", reports the Daily Record.

He said: "Despite our operational capabilities and the injection of additional capital, trading was challenging for us prior to ‘lockdown’.

"The retail market in which we operated was difficult and uncertain with customers reining in spending.

"Like most other retailers, on top of that, the impact of coronavirus has, I’m afraid, made a difficult situation even more challenging."

Blue Group was recently bought over by Alteri Investments, which included Bensons for Beds, which is to be saved.

Mr Jackson said: "I would like to take this opportunity to be honest, the business was - and unfortunately, despite our best efforts, remains - in a difficult position and I’m sorry to say that we’ve now concluded we have to take immediate action to ensure the part of our business with the brightest prospects, can rebuild as we emerge from Covid-19.

"So, it is with heartfelt regret that I must tell you today that the Group has taken the difficult decision to call upon administrators."
