NEW YORK _ A Manhattan grand jury has indicted Harvey Weinstein on charges of criminal sex act and rape, the Manhattan district attorney said Wednesday.
The fallen former Hollywood mogul was arrested Friday on charges he sexually assaulted two women _ a former acting student and another victim who has never been publicly identified.
"This indictment brings the defendant another step closer to accountability for the crimes of violence with which he is now charged," DA Cy Vance Jr. said in a statement.
"Our office will try this case not in the press, but in the courtroom where it belongs. The defendant's recent assault on the integrity of the survivors and the legal process is predictable. We are confident that when the jury hears the evidence, it will reject these attacks out of hand."
Weinstein, 66, and his attorney, Benjamin Brafman, have denied the allegations.
Earlier in the day, a spokesman for Brafman said his client declined to testify before the grand jury that has been hearing evidence against the longtime movie mogul for weeks.
