Harvey man charged with striking Chicago cop with stolen van on South Side

Jan. 03--A Harvey man was charged with attempted first-degree murder and other citations after allegedly striking a Chicago police officer with a stolen van on New Year's Day on the South Side, police said.

Randy Kendricks, 19, of the 15600 block of South Vine Avenue in Harvey, is accused of intentionally hitting and injuring a police officer with the van around 2:35 p.m. Thursday in the 6000 block of South Wolcott Avenue in the West Englewood neighborhood, according to a statement from the Chicago Police Department's Office of News Affairs.

He was ordered held with no bail in bond court Saturday.

Police officers at first tried to pull over the stolen van, which was occupied by two male offenders. But the offenders instead chose to flee and in the process crashed into a police squad car, according to the statement.

An officer then came out of his car, and the driver of the van "accelerated and intentionally struck" him, the statement said. The two offenders fled on foot from the scene, and after a foot chase Kendricks was arrested and taken into custody.

The 26-year-old officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries to his left leg and a possible concussion, according to police news affairs. He was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital for treatment.

POlice are still looking for the second offender in connection with the incident.

Kendricks was charged with a felony count of attempted first-degree murder, a felony count of aggravated battery with the use of a deadly weapon and a felony count of receiving, possessing and selling a stolen vehicle, according to a statement from the Chicago Police Department's Office of News Affairs.

Kendricks was also cited for obstructing identification and damaging public property.
