Harvey joins Hawthorn AFL coaching panel

Former Collingwood AFL caretaker coach Robert Harvey has joined Hawthorn, where he will serve as part of a new-look panel under Sam Mitchell.

Harvey held the top job on an interim basis after the Magpies parted ways with Nathan Buckley in June, leading the side to two wins and seven losses.

He had previously spent a decade as an assistant coach with the club.

Harvey's departure was announced earlier this month with the appointment of Craig McRae as Collingwood's new full-time senior coach.

He joins triple-premiership Hawks David Hale and Andrew Collins as new additions to Hawthorn's coaching panel, along with former West Coast assistant Adrian Hickmott.

"We believe his coaching style and method really complement the other members of our group, which gives a strong and holistic feel to our coaching squad," Hawthorn head of football Rob McCartney said.

"While Robert will bring his highly renowned football IQ and technical nous to Hawthorn, we are equally excited about the significant cultural impact he will have as we plan for the future success of our football club."

Mitchell took over as Hawthorn's senior coach following the messy departure of Alastair Clarkson, who was originally set to coach for one more year.

Harvey, a two-time Brownlow Medallist who played 383 games for St Kilda, said he could see great potential in the rookie coach.

"I think it's also an advantage that I don't really know him that well, so I can come in with fresh eyes and give feedback where required," he told the club website.

"He's a first-year senior coach so he's going to have his challenges but hopefully we can be here to support him as a group."

Collingwood recently bolstered their football department with the addition of former Brisbane coach Justin Leppitsch and ex-Carlton coach Brendon Bolton.

Carlton are still on the lookout for a new senior coach after sacking David Teague.

Port Adelaide assistant Michael Voss is the frontrunner, with News Corp reporting the former Brisbane great will travel to Melbourne on Wednesday for a final interview.
