Harvey Elliott takes big step at Liverpool as William Gallas makes odd prediction

Here is your Liverpool FC morning digest for Friday, August 12.

Harvey Elliot pens new five-year deal

Harvey Elliot has signed a new long-term contract at Liverpool to keep him at the club until 2027.

The 19-year-old put pen to paper on the five-year deal on Thursday, just one year after his previous extension - justified rewards for the teenager’s increasing prominence in the first-team picture.

Speaking to LFCTV after the announcement, Elliot said: "I feel like it's not more pressure on me, but more of a situation where I'm more of a first-team player in a way than last year. Obviously coming back from loan, I didn't play in the first season I joined as much as I have in the last couple of years.

“"It feels more of a contract now, and a first-team contract, in terms of me and how it's going to run in the next couple of years. I'm just very excited to keep putting on a shirt and keep playing. I can't wait to get out there again."

William Gallas makes bold Reds prediction

Former Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham defender William Gallas has predicted that Liverpool won’t make the top four this season.

The 84-cap French international said he believes the loss of Sadio Mane - who moved to Bayern earlier this summer - and a supposedly leaky defence will leave the Reds out of the Champions League spots for the first time in seven seasons come May.

He told Genting Casino: “On top four, Liverpool can miss out because they don't have Sadio Mane anymore and Diaz does not have the same impact. Liverpool always concede goals too, like we saw against Fulham. Even if I like how Liverpool play, I think it will be City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham.”

Given that Gallas put his three former clubs into the top-four ahead of the Reds - alongside champions Manchester City - such a claim is to be taken with a pinch of salt, but the claim Liverpool ‘always concede goals’ couldn’t be further from the truth.

You can read more on Gallas’ prediction here, or dive into why his claim is ‘factually wrong’ here.
