Harvey Elliott suffers Liverpool injury frustration as late FIFA Club World Cup decision made

Harvey Elliott will not be available to bolster Liverpool's attempts to become champions of the world.

Elliott had been expected to join up with the squad in Qatar for the FIFA Club World Cup after featuring in the Carabao Cup quarter-final at Aston Villa on Tuesday night.

The 16-year-old was an impressive performer despite the youngest team in Liverpool's history falling to a harsh 5-0 defeat.

But Elliott was carrying a knock towards the end of the game and the decision was made for him not to travel.

His place in the 23-man squad has been taken by Caoimhin Kelleher, the Irish goalkeeper joining defensive duo Sepp van den Berg and Ki-Jana Hoever.

All three featured at Villa Park, and will be part of the training squad for Liverpool's second game in Doha on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp's side will hope to ensure that is a final against Flamengo rather than a third place play-off against Al-Hilal when they take on Mexican side Moneterrey in their semi-final at the Khalifa International Stadium on Wednesday evening (kick-off 5.30pm UK time).
