Harvey Elliott set for European bow as Liverpool hopefuls seek Napoli reversal

Harvey Elliott is set to have his first experience of European competition with Liverpool as the UEFA Youth League gets underway.

The Reds, who reached the round of 16 last season, begin their campaign with another clash at Napoli on Tuesday afternoon (kick-off 1pm).

Elliott, a summer signing from Fulham, has already featured for a Liverpool under-21 side in the EFL Trophy this season.

And he is one of several notable names expected to line up for Barry Lewtas' side as they once again visit the Stadio Pasquale Ianniello in Frattamaggiore, scene of a tempestuous clash against Napoli in last season's group stage.

Liverpool were seconds away from a hard-earned 1-0 win when the Italians equalised four minutes into stoppage time.

The controversial strike – there were two balls on the field at the same time and the throw-in from which the goal was scored was taken 30 yards forward from where it should have been – was in keeping with a game in which the home side were happy to intimidate their opponents.

Then there was the matter of an artificial pitch that had seen better days and contributed to a difficult experience for the youngsters.

“When you come away to a tough environment, you play in front of a lively crowd on a terrible pitch and the ref isn't great, those are things the boys will experience further down the line,” said Lewtas in the aftermath.

Indeed, many of the Liverpool squad who featured that afternoon remain eligible to feature in the under-19 side, including Curtis Jones and Jake Cain, who on Monday signed his first professional contract with the Reds.

Ki-Jana Hoever, who was omitted from Liverpool's Champions League squad, is also expected to play.

The travelling party trained at the stadium on Monday night on a pitch that, while seemingly relaid, remains artificial and has prompted some concern from the visitors.
