Harvey Elliott loan situation explained after Liverpool return claims

Liverpool have no plans to recall Harvey Elliot from his loan spell at Blackburn Rovers.

Elliott is proving a major success since agreeing a season-long switch to the Championship side in October.

The 17-year-old's strike in Wednesday's 2-1 win over Rotherham was his fourth in 14 appearances, with the winger also contributing four assists so far this campaign.

With Liverpool having suffered a catalogue of injuries this season, the loss of Diogo Jota for up to eight weeks had prompted suggestions Elliott may be recalled from Ewood Park in the New Year.

The Reds, though, have no inclination to bring the youngster back to Anfield before the end of his loan spell, and have been hugely impressed by his continued progress.

And Blackburn boss Tony Mowbray will be delighted after admitting he has been attempting to not draw too much attention to Elliott's impact at the Lancashire club.

"Sometimes I have to try and play him down a little bit because the more publicity he gets, the more times he scores goals and the higher profile he gets and probably the manager (Jurgen Klopp) recognises more of that and gets told by everybody that Elliott's scored again at the weekend," he said.

"Jurgen might be sitting there thinking 'what's he doing out on loan? Let's get him back'.

"He's an important player for us. I know he's enjoying his football. I hope he can stay. The contract suggests he's going to stay for the rest of the season.

"I think Liverpool in their minds probably know that a 17-year-old boy is only a peripheral player for such an amazing football team that they are and they do have bigger, more established players to do the job and every game he plays at this level is fantastic and invaluable for his experience moving forward."
