Harvester and Toby Carvery offering free meals for children - but you'll have to be quick

The cost of living crisis is still taking a toll on many families throughout the UK and lots of us are having to tighten the purse strings during the summer holidays. However, a number of cafes, restaurants and supermarkets have been offering cheap and even free meals for children in a bid to tackle holiday hunger.

Harvester and Toby Carvery are the latest brands to announce their kids-eat-free meal - but it’s very different to the likes of Asda, Tesco and Morrisons. Instead of offering children a free or £1 meal when an adult spends a minimum amount, the chains will be offering a set amount of free takeaway meals a day.

And once they’re gone, they’re gone. Each restaurant is offering just five free takeaway meals for children throughout August. But there are a few rules to follow, too, as seen in Manchester Evening News.

Firstly, they’re only available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, meaning each Toby Carvery and Harvester branch will be giving away 10 plates of food a week. To get their hands on the meals, families must call their local Toby Carvery before 10.30am, or Harvester before 11am on the day of collection, to arrange a pick up time, which must be before 11am or 12pm respectively.

A maximum of four kids meals can be reserved per family, to be managed at the manager’s discretion. At Toby Carvery, the free meal is only applicable on the standard or vegetarian breakfasts, but there’s a little more choice at Harvester, where children can choose from a quarter rotisserie chicken, southern fried Quorn bites, or fish fingers, all served with chips and sweetcorn. The offer will run at both chains from today (August 2) until August 31.

It comes after Marks and Spencer announced that they would be extending their two-week kids eat free offering for the whole of the six week holidays, meaning families will be able to get a free Kids’ Munch Menu breakfast until 11am or lunch between 11am and close when you spend £5 or more for adults. Other venues offering free or cheap meals for children this summer include Morrisons, Bella Italia, Farmhouse Inns and Hungry Horse. You can find the full list here.
