Harvard Reveals $2.2 Billion SpaceX Stake, Its Largest Public Equity Holding: University's Bet on Elon Musk-led Company Outshines Amazon and Nvidia

Cambridge,,Ma,-,May,29:,Students,Of,Harvard,University,Gather

Harvard Management Co. disclosed a $2.2 billion stake in Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ:SPCX), an early investment in Elon Musk‘s rocket company whose value became public for the first time following SpaceX’s blockbuster Nasdaq debut in June.

A Bigger Bet Than Amazon or Nvidia

The university held 12.94 million shares of SpaceX Class A common stock as of June 30, according to a 13F filing disclosed on Friday.

The stake makes SpaceX Harvard’s largest disclosed public equity holding, well ahead of its next-largest positions in Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN), Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd. (NYSE:TSM), Cerebras Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CBRS) and Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA).

The SpaceX stake accounts for more than half of Harvard’s $4.3 billion in total U.S. equities disclosed in the filing.

At Friday’s closing price, Harvard’s stake would be worth approximately $1.81 billion.

The University of California’s investment arm also disclosed a stake in SpaceX, worth roughly $1 billion.

SpaceX Stock’s Volatile Run

The company went public on the Nasdaq on June 12 and hit an all-time high of around $225 days later, before falling as low as around $104 in early August, a decline of more than 50% from its peak.

Shares have since rebounded after the company reported second-quarter revenue of $7.81 billion, up 92% year-over-year and ahead of the $6.93 billion analysts expected.

SpaceX’s rebound since its post-IPO plunge has also boosted Elon Musk’s net worth, which topped $858 billion last week, making him richer than Larry Page, Sergey Brin, and Jeff Bezos combined.

Other Big Investors In SpaceX

Nvidia disclosed a $21 billion stake in SpaceX as of the end of the second quarter, according to its own 13F filing.

Google parent Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) disclosed a $94.1 billion stake in SpaceX, with about $80 billion of that stake that had been under short-term sale restrictions and the remaining $14.1 billion locked up through the third quarter of 2027.

Last week, Norway’s $2.3 trillion sovereign wealth fund revealed a $1.22 billion stake in SpaceX, its first public disclosure of a position in the company.

Price Action: Shares of SpaceX closed 0.91% lower on Friday at $140 and gained 0.4% in extended trading.

Benzinga edge rankings indicate SpaceX’s stock has a positive price trend across the short, medium and long term.
