Novelist Haruki Murakami, 71, will present a two-hour special radio program on Tokyo FM and 37 other stations nationwide on May 22 to cheer up those who are struggling with day-to-day life amid the spread of the new coronavirus.
He will air his selection of uplifting songs and share messages from listeners that were collected in advance under the theme "What I want to talk and think about." Murakami will share his thoughts on the crisis and offer encouragement to listeners.
The show, "Murakami Radio Stay Home Special," will air from 10 p.m. to 11:55 p.m. and be recorded in Murakami's study at home where he'll select songs from his huge collection of vinyl to play on his own record player.
Listeners can send messages via the special Murakami Radio website by May 17.
Murakami broadcasts an hour-long radio program on the station irregularly. After the extension of the state of emergency this month, Murakami was said to have contacted the radio station to talk about airing a special program.
A person in charge of the program said: "Murakami was saying that he wanted to present a program that would make people feel a little more cheerful and hopeful. We hope the program conveys the voice of Murakami, who always cares about a silent majority."
