Hartcliffe man convicted of historic sexual abuse of children is jailed

A Hartcliffe man maintained his innocence after being charged with the historical sexual abuse of two boys. But a jury found otherwise and he is starting a 12-and-a-half year jail term.

Ian Waine, 43, of Lakeshore Drive, was convicted of rape and two indecent assaults of a complainant aged eight. He was also convicted of four indecent assaults of a second complainant aged 10.

Judge James Patrick told him: "You are a serious sexual offender." The judge told Waine to register as a sex offender for life and barred him from working with children and vulnerable adults for life.

Bristol Crown Court heard Waine was aged in his late teens when he sexually abused a boy in a bath. The victim suffered psychological harm as a result, the court heard.

Waine gave the second boy a cigarette and threatened to tell child's parents he smoked - unless he took his clothes off. The court heard the boy stripped and Waine sexually abused him.

David Scutt, prosecuting, read an impact statement from one victim in which he said he found it difficult to open up about what happened and felt ashamed. He said his relationships had suffered as a result, he had been offered counselling and could "only hope" he could be helped.

The complainant added: "He's been found guilty. My depression will last, maybe, for ever as it caused so much pain.

"I'm just relieved that I was listened to and he will have to answer for what he's done, finally."
