Avon and Somerset Police said there it was believed to be an isolated incident with no wider threat to the public.

A police spokesperson said "We were called by the ambulance service shortly before 6pm to an incident in which a man was found critically injured at a residential address in Bishport Avenue, in Hartcliffe.

"At this time we believe this to be an isolated incident and there to be no wider risk to the public."

Armed officers had originally surrounded the tower block and pictures showed a police cordon set up with the air ambulance landing on a nearby field.

One local said last night: "Something big in Hartcliffe police fire and ambulance helicopter by flats in Hartcliffe."

Another resident was quoted saying "it is all unfolding opposite in tower block house.

"There are lots of police cars, ambulances' and a response unit has arrived now."

Police have said they will remain at the scene while enquires continue. We will update this story when we get more information from police.
