Harry Winks is setting the example Mauricio Pochettino needs to overcome Tottenham's struggles

Tottenham lie third in the Premier League but with just eight points - level with teams down to ninth place.

Of course, only five games have been played but the Lilywhites have rarely convinced outside of 45 minutes against Crystal Palace.

Mauricio Pochettino lamented his side's approach against Olympiacos and made his clear it was not down to his squad's talent.

There was a sense that the Spurs boss and his players were frustrated with the application of their plan in Athens. Pochettino noted the organisation of his team and their ability to dominate the game were sub-par but perhaps one player is setting to the tone.

Harry Winks has started every match Spurs have played this season, a pleasing result for the 23-year-old who has struggled with ankle and groin injuries in recent seasons.

Pochettino has long been a fan of his charge, and the midfielder has been ideally suited to help Spurs adjust to European football but his influence could be set to go further.

While the England international has been unable to ensure the whole team is living up to it's potential just yet, the way the Argentinean coach speaks about Winks' performances seem contrary to his assessment of the squad overall.

Speaking ahead of the clash with Leicester Pochettino said: “I think it is true that he is improving a lot. I think there is still room to improve, but I am happy with his mentality, how he has started to improve in his recivity.

"Today I think he is one of the most aggressive players on the pitch, when his characteristics when he keeps the ball, how he plays, with the ball he is very aggressive, breaking lines, keeping possession, always thinking forwards. But what pleases me the most - I think we expect that from him - but what pleases us the most is his play without the ball.

"The progress, how is working, how he is fighting, how aggressive he is and the hunger to recover the ball quick, that is I think what he need to keep working and pushing on because that is what is going to make  the difference to be a good player or a big player.”

It shouldn't be a surprise the Spurs youth product was handed his Premier League debut by his boss when you consider how much he embodies the qualities Pochettino admires most.

Winks remains a key cog in Tottenham's most important games and may have quite the task as the north London side attempt to make a statement against Leicester. Brendan Rodgers' side have ambitions of Europe and a win will go someone to adding momentum to the attributes the Hemel Hempstead-born star.

Among the excitement of new signings in the midfield department in Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso, it is Winks who will be setting the standard and proving his worth that should set the pulses racing.
