Harry Styles in running to play Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann biopic

Some major names are in the running to play the King of Rock and Roll.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Great Gatsby director Baz Luhrmann is considering some big stars to play Elvis Presley in his upcoming biopic on the iconic musician.

In contention is One Direction star and now solo singer-songwriter Harry Styles, who previously appeared in the Christopher Nolan film Dunkirk.

Styles is known to be a huge fan of Elvis and sung and recorded songs by the singer when he was a child, he previously told The Sun.

The singer is up against the likes of Ansel Elgort from Baby Driver, who will play the role of Tony in Stephen Spielberg's remake of West Side Story.

Others in competition for the part are Kick-Ass star Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Whiplash star Miles Teller, and Austin Butler.

It is believed that Elgort, Teller, and Taylor-Johnson have already screen-tested, with Styles and Butler in line to do so.

The confirmed casting is expected in the coming weeks.

Already cast in the film is Oscar-winner Tom Hanks as Elvis' dominating manager Colonel Tom Parker.

The film is set to tackle the rise of the star to his height of fame, with a particular focus on his relationship with Parker.

Luhrmann is known for his films Strictly Ballroom, Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge, Australia, and The Great Gatsby.

Baz Lurhmann's Elvis biopic does not currently have a release date.
