Harry Styles accent baffles Brit Awards viewers as he accepts Best Single honour

Harry Styles baffled Brit Awards viewers with his rather different accent a he picked up an award at Tuesday's big event.

The former One Direction star won the one category he was nominated in, beating the likes of Joel Corry and eventual double winner Dua Lipa to win British Single.

The always stylish singer made his way up to the Brits winners podium in an eye catching brown and burnt orange suit but, while his outfit got a big reaction, the biggest reaction was reserved for his accent.

As Harry talked about how it meant so much to win the Best Single honour and how "moments like this make me more incredibly grateful to get to do this," it didn't take long for viewers to flock to Twitter to share their shock at how he sounded, with a definite American twang creeping in at times.

One Twitter user reacted: "my mum just asked why harry was talking with an american accent at the brits," and an equally bemused viewer tweeted: "Why is Harry Styles talking in an american accent?"

Others likened Harry's speech to Joss Stone's infamous Brits appearance from years ago when she suddenly developed an America accent despite being from Devon, while a third viewer posted: "Harry Styles has got that thing I used to get when I sat next to someone in the office with a regional accent and you’d fully take it on within a week of knowing them."

TV host Lorraine Kelly discussed the change in accent on her show on Wednesday but, to be fair to Harry he has been based largely in America of late, filming a number of films including Don't Worry Darling, with rumoured girlfriend Olivia Wilde.

Aside from Harry, other Brits winners on the night included Little Mix for British Group, J-Hus for British Male and Dua Lipa, who was the toast of the O2 Arena after scooping British Female and Best Album.

Performances came from the likes of Coldplay, Griff, The Weeknd and Elton John and Olly Alexander.
