Harry Redknapp has suggested Liverpool have made a mistake on transfer deadline day by not signing another backup goalkeeper to replace Adrian after the heavy Aston Villa defeat.
Manchester United's Sergio Romero remains at Old Trafford despite being linked with both Merseyside clubs ahead of the deadline yesterday.
The Argentine was linked with Everton and Liverpool as deals were being finalised ahead of the changed summer window closing.
Carlo Ancelotti was in the market for competition to his number one choice Jordan Pickford, with the Italian manager eventually securing a deal for Robin Olsen.
Jurgen Klopp was also said to be interested in bringing in extra reinforcements following Alisson's training injury, ruling the Brazilian out for up to six weeks.
But no deal materialsed and Redknapp, speaking on Sky Sports News last night, seems to believe that was a mistake.
He said: "You would have thought he (Romero) might have gone to Liverpool.
"Liverpool need a goalkeeper. They need a goalkeeper more than Everton.
"If Alisson is out for a while, it could be vital for Liverpool. They’re going to need to make sure they have good back-up because it sounds like he could be out for a long time."
Alisson Becker is set to face a spell on the sidelines lasting around six weeks, Jurgen Klopp confirmed over the weekend.
It means he will likely miss the Merseyside Derby as well as the first three matches of the Champions League group stage.
The prospect of such the Reds' number one being absent for crucial fixtures led to rumours they would make a deadline signing for a new backup goalkeeper, even to give extra support to Adrian with Caoimhin Kelleher the only other player available in the squad for the position.
Not everyone was happy with the speculation surrounding Romero, with the player's wife taking to Instagram to air out her displeasure.
Ms Guercio launched an attack on the Manchester club for not allowing him to leave.
Her message read: "Sergio Romero worked hard for this club.
"Last trophy they won, they lifted it with him.
"He helped the team reach 4 finals/semi finals and then was left on the bench only to lose them all.
"It is time for them to return the opportunity and let him go. RESPECT FOR ONCE!!!"
He will now have to play third choice behind David De Gea and Dean Henderson.
