Harry Redknapp sends a key message to Frank Lampard as Chelsea 'start a new dawn'

Harry Redknapp says that Frank Lampard being appointed as Chelsea's new head coach is "fantastic" for the Blues legend and the club.

The 41-year-old, who is the Blues' all-time top goalscorer, has been appointed as the club's new head coach on a three-year deal, after spending his first season in management at Derby County.

And Redknapp has backed his nephew to succeed on his return to his former club, describing Lampard as a "true legend" at Chelsea .

"What a great opportunity for Frank. I am sure the Chelsea fans will be delighted, he is a true legend at Chelsea. What an opportunity for him in only his second year in management. I think it is fantastic for him and great for the club as well," he said, speaking to Talksport.

And Redknapp believes that Lampard is the right man to guide Chelsea through their transfer ban, with the Blues unable to register new players this summer, or in January, as things stand.

That is due to the club being sanctioned by Fifa after breaching rules in relation to youth players, with the ban applying to two transfer windows.

But the former Tottenham and West Ham boss thinks the ban could mean the start of a new era for the Blues, with Lampard at the helm.

"He knows how to treat people and he has a lovely manner, he knows the game as well as anybody. It is about players, and it may be a blessing in disguise that they can’t recruit now," he said.

"They have all these great players coming through the academy and they keep loaning them out, but we never see them play for Chelsea. Now they have got to play some of these young kids. It may be the start of a new dawn for Chelsea with Frank, and Jody Morris going back with him.

"Throw them in, let’s see how good they are. We keep hyping them up, so let's see if they are as good as we say they are, there's only one way to find out, and I think Frank will do that.

“It is great opportunity for him. He is a class act and I am sure he will do well."

Meanwhile, Redknapp says he is confident that Lampard will be given time to succeed at Chelsea, adding that it is great to see him being given an opportunity at a top club, following the trend of other young English managers getting jobs in management in British football.

“I am sure he will get that[ time]. They know he is such a legend there, and everyone will want him to succeed," said Redknapp.

"It is a new era because they can't go and buy players, they have to give those kids who were out on loan a chance, let's see what they are made of. He will have to play three or four of them, and let’s hope they are as good as we all hope they are.

“It is good to see some of the young guys. Most of the foreign coaches are coming into big clubs, but now we have an Englishman at a top six club. It is good to see people like Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Scott Parker. I am sure they will do a fantastic job, and I have no doubts that Frank will be a top manager and he will do a fantastic job going forward."
