Harry Redknapp reveals Mauricio Pochettino 'talks' after Manchester United sacked Jose Mourinho

Former Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp has hinted that Mauricio Pochettino thought he was going to get the Manchester United job last year.

Pochettino was heavily linked with the Old Trafford post after Jose Mourinho was sacked in December 2018.

However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was the man tasked with leading the club forward instead after a successful spell as the caretaker boss.

MEN Sport have previously reported that Pochettino was interested in the vacant managerial role at Old Trafford after the Portuguese coach left United last December.

Pochettino was sacked by Spurs on Tuesday night with the club 14th in the Premier League table after 12 league matches.

While ex-United boss Mourinho is understood to be a strong contender to succeed Pochettino at Spurs, speculation has already begun about where the Argentine could manage next.

Bayern Munich's vacant managerial position makes them an obvious choice, whilst Zinedine Zidane's position at Real Madrid may also come under scrutiny in the coming months.

However, former Spurs boss Redknapp has revealed that Pochettino thought he was in line to move to a big club last season before a deal fell through.

Redknapp told Sky Sports news : "He was reasonably successful. I like him, I think he's great, I've got a great relationship with him. He will think he's going to get a big club and he will get a big club, there is no doubt about that.

"Whether it's in England, I know he thought he had a big job due last year, I know his advisors spoke to another club and it looked like it was a done deal, apparently, but he didn't get the job. He'll be in a big job very shortly."

Of course, Pochettino has been continuously linked with the managerial job at Manchester United and after Mourinho was sacked last season, he was the early favourite to replace him.

With that in mind, while Redknapp didn't outrightly name the club in question when posed that Manchester United were heavily linked with Pochettino, he replied: "he was" with a smirk.
