Harry Redknapp plots Tottenham return with telling response to Frank Lampard appointment

Harry Redknapp has joked he is ready to "crawl" back to Tottenham to be the permanent replacement for Antonio Conte.

Conte left his job as Spurs boss two weeks ago following an explosive rant after a thrilling draw at basement boys Southampton. Cristian Stellini has been placed in interim charge of the team for the rest of the campaign, with Spurs battling for a top four spot.

The Italian's exit came just before Chelsea boss Graham Potter was himself sacked following a dreadful 31-game reign. Former Blues manager Frank Lampard has returned to Stamford Bridge to guide the team for the rest of the season before a permanent appointment is made in the summer.

That return followed Roy Hodgson's comeback at Crystal Palace, with the former England boss taking over from Patrick Vieira for the rest of the season. Given Hodgson's return, Redknapp feels he could still do a good job at Tottenham.

“I’m ready, I’d crawl there! I still think my football advice is pretty good," he told GB News when asked if he would go back to Spurs 11 years after his first spell as manager came to an end.

“It’s brilliant to see some of the older guys coming back. Look at Neil Warnock at Huddersfield, he’s gone back in and won three on the spin. Roy Hodgson is back at Palace. Good luck to them.”

Redknapp is Lampard's uncle and has a close relationship with the Chelsea legend. He admitted his surprise at seeing the former midfielder return to Stamford Bridge, but insisted it is an opportunity that was too good to turn down.

“To be honest I was surprised. Frank obviously had a spell at Everton and I was wondering what his future held for him in management. Would he come back in again or would he maybe work in TV as a pundit," Redknapp added.

"But he just loves football, it is his life. I think he wants to be in there managing and so when this opportunity came, I mean it was just fantastic for him to go back to Chelsea now. They have got the Champions League quarter final coming up with Real Madrid.

"I mean, what an incredible game to take. It's been a great opportunity. If he can go there and do well, maybe he gets a job. He can really build his reputation again, which is important.

"And they absolutely love him there, the fans love him. So I'm sure they'll be delighted. They've got so much respect for Frank. So yeah, it's a great opportunity for him. Frank needs to go in there with confidence.

"He has got a fantastic squad of players there. Some great talent. He needs to go in there, lift confidence and try to get players smiling again. There’s a lot at stake. The players are playing for pride as well.”
