Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has blasted Manchester United's decision to appoint Ralf Rangnick as their new interim manager, describing it as "ridiculous."
Rangnick, 63, is set to be installed as United's new boss on a six-month contract, before taking up a consultancy position at Old Trafford once his time in the managerial hot-seat is completed.
United made the decision to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last weekend following the 4-1 defeat to Watford at Vicarage Road and confirmed that they would be turning to an interim manager to take the club through until the end of this season.
However, United felt they had a chance of luring Paris Saint-Germain head coach Mauricio Pochettino to the club mid-season, but saw their opening attempt to try and prize the Argentine away from the French capital knocked back. Therefore, they have been forced to revert back to the original plan and turn to Rangnick, with the German's arrival at Old Trafford imminent.
Although Rangnick will bring a wealth of experience to the club, Redknapp, a highly experienced boss himself, has criticised the decision, saying he has "never heard anything so stupid" and that he would have liked to have seen Michael Carrick given a stint in the position.
"The fact United have brought in Ralf Rangnick as an interim to replace the interim, before they get the man they really want, is ridiculous," said Redknapp, penning his column for The Sun.
"I’ve never heard anything so stupid in my life, whichever way you look at it.
"If they wanted Mauricio Pochettino, as we were led to believe, then there were ways and means to make it happen now.
"And if they had to wait for him, they shouldn’t have pushed Michael aside and put someone above him for a few months. What does that say? We’ve got no faith in you?"
Redknapp knows Carrick well from their time together at West Ham United right back at the beginning of this current century. For him, Carrick should have been the club's choice to take charge on an interim basis because of his knowledge about United and how they tick.
Redknapp added: "The thing is, he [Carrick] knows United inside out. He’s got a great footballing brain - you don’t play the game how he did unless you understand it.
"If they needed to bring in anyone before a manager was appointed, then get a coach alongside him, because they were a man down after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer left.
"They should have just gone for someone experienced, but let Michael run the show until then."
