Harry Redknapp drops huge hint about Mauricio Pochettino and the Manchester United job

Former Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp has insinuated that Mauricio Pochettino thought he was going to get the Manchester United job last year.

The Argentine was sacked by Spurs on Tuesday night with the club 14th in the Premier League table after 12 league matches.

Pochettino led the club to their first-ever Champions League final last season but was dismissed following their poor start to the 2019/20 season.

Whilst Jose Mourinho is the early bookmakers' favourite to replace Pochettino in north London, speculation has already begun about where the Argentine could manage next.

Bayern Munich's vacant managerial position makes them an obvious choice, whilst Zinedine Zidan's position at Real Madrid is also looking perilous.

However, former Spurs boss Redknapp has revealed that Pochettino thought he was in line to move to a big club last season before a deal fell through.

Redknapp told Sky Sports News: "He was reasonably successful. I like him, I think he's great, I've got a great relationship with him. He will think he's going to get a big club and he will get a big club, there is no doubt about that.

"Whether it's in England, I know he thought he had a big job due last year, I know his advisors spoke to another club and it looked like it was a done deal, apparently, but he didn't get the job. He'll be in a big job very shortly."

Alasdair Gold's reaction to Mauricio Pochettino sacking

Of course, Pochettino has been continuously linked with the managerial job at Manchester United and after Mourinho was sacked last season, he was the early favourite to replace him.

However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was the man tasked with leading their revival instead.

Whilst Redknapp didn't outrightly name the club in question when posed that Manchester United were heavily linked with Pochettino, he replied: "he was," with a suggestible chuckle to his voice.
