Harry Redknapp defends Jose Mourinho amid stuttering start at Tottenham

Former Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp believes Jose Mourinho should not be criticised for Spurs' current poor form and thinks the club's problems run deeper than the manager.

After a promising start in which Spurs won their first three matches under Mourinho their performances have dropped off, and they have recently suffered disappointing results against the likes of Norwich, Southampton and Middlesbrough.

Redknapp, however, does not think Mourinho is to blame, and believes it may take time for Spurs to return to their best.

Speaking to Sky Sports Redknapp said: " Tottenham , they're going through a funny little, well quite a long, spell when you look at it.

"The last 25 games with Poch in charge the form was for whatever reason, they were going along so well and then suddenly that big run of bad form. And the form at the moment has been up and down too really.

"Jose has gone in there, we know his record, it's incredible, but no-one's got a magic wand and at the moment it seems the team just doesn't look right.

"Bad result the other day at Southampton, a couple of iffy performances, lucky to get away with it at Norwich."

Despite their patchy form, Redknapp thinks Spurs could pull off a shock and be the first team to beat Liverpool in the Premier League this season when they host Jurgen Klopp's side on Saturday evening.

"They'll raise their game for Liverpool at home,' Redknapp added. "They'll want to break that Liverpool unbeaten run and it'll be a tight game for sure.

"You wouldn't write Tottenham off, they've got outstanding players in the team, but at the moment Liverpool really do look different class."

Spurs are facing something of an injury crisis ahead of the game, with the likes of Harry Kane, Moussa Sissoko and Ben Davies all missing.
