Harry Redknapp admits Airdrie talks but 'rules out takeover'

Former Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has admitted he spoke with Airdrieonians about becoming involved with the League One club.

But it seems the I'm A Celebrity winner won't be taking over at the Penny Cars Stadium, as shock reports suggested last night.

The 73-year has confirmed he spoke to the Diamonds' co-owner Paul Hetherington and while he "appreciated their interest", discussions would not be going any further.

Diamonds fans were left stunned last night when it emerged Redknapp, who has previously stated his desire to become involved 'behind the scenes at a small club', could be heading to North Lanarkshire.

But Redknapp told the Scottish Sun: “Ever since I said recently I fancied a return to football I’ve been inundated with hundreds of messages from clubs.

“I do like the idea of an involvement again from the football side of things – but I certainly won’t be putting money into a club.

"It’s true that I spoke with the Airdrie chairman and he seemed a decent fella.

"I was also impressed with what he had to say.

“But I’m certainly not trying to buy Airdrie – and I can honestly say that it won’t be going any further.

“I appreciated their interest.

“But there won’t be anything happening there.”

The former Portsmouth boss has been out of the game since 2017 when he parted ways with Birmingham City and was even linked with the Nigeria job recently, but he has said "it's fair to say that won't be happening either."

Lanarkshire Live Sport has contacted Airdrie for comment.
