Harry Potter: The dramatic love-triangle affair three cast members were caught up in

The Harry Potter series is perhaps the best known and most widely adored film franchise of all time and has super-fans by the millions.

If there's one thing that Potterheads love it's all the details from behind the scenes of the films, including finding out every little detail about the personal and private lives of the Harry Potter cast.

However, even the biggest boy wizard fan will probably have no idea that three of the film series' most iconic stars were actually caught up in a heart-breaking love-triangle behind the scenes.

Oscar winner Emma Thompson appeared in three of the Harry Potter films, playing divination teacher Professor Trelawney - her first husband Kenneth Branagh also appeared in the series.

Kenneth, who Emma married in 1989, starred as hapless Defence Against the Dark Art teacher Gilderoy Lockhart in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Despite being known as one of Hollywood's ultimate couples, in 1995, Emma and Kenneth announced their separation after Kenneth reportedly had an affair with another Hollywood legend.

The legend in question? Fellow Harry Potter actress Helena Bonham Carter.

Helena played major antagonist Bellatrix Lestrange in a number of highest grossing Potter films. Kenneth had a public relationship with Helena, although the pair later split in 1999.

Since then, Emma has spoken up about the heartbreak she dealt with after Kenneth’s reported affair.

According to Glamour magazine, Emma said she based the heartbreak of her Love Actually character on her real life experience.

“That scene where my character is standing by the bed crying is so well known because it’s something everyone’s been through,” the actor said.

“I had my heart very badly broken by Ken. So I knew what it was like to find the necklace that wasn’t meant for me.

“Well it wasn’t exactly that, but we’ve all been through it.”

Emma has reportedly forgiven Helena - she told the Sunday Times she has "made her peace" with Helena and described her as a "wonderful woman".

"You can't hold on to anything like that,” Emma said.

"It's pointless. I haven't got the energy for it."
