Harry Potter and the Cursed Child fan-trailer imagines movie adaptation

The Harry Potter universe continues to captivate fans

The Harry Potter universe continues to captivate fans more than a decade since the movie franchise came to an end in 2011. However, that is not really the end of the story, as the Wizarding World has continued to expand with the Fantastic Beasts trilogy, and, of course, the stage play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Many people have questioned whether the latter of these will ever make it to the big screen in a new movie in the franchise. While that currently doesn’t seem to be on the cards, a new fan-trailer has imagined what it could look like if it does happen with the original cast returning to their roles.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is set 19 years after the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, aligning with the epilogue of the last book and film. The play's story picks up with Harry, now the Head of Magical Law Enforcement, Hermione, serving as the Minister for Magic, and Ron managing Weasley's Wizard Wheezes. The narrative focuses on Harry and Ginny's son, Albus Severus Potter, and his unlikely friendship with Scorpius Malfoy, the son of Draco.

The fan trailer touches on the play's central themes, including the struggle of Albus and Scorpius with their family legacies. The plot thickens as they come into possession of a Time-Turner and embark on a mission to save Cedric Diggory from his fate in the Triwizard Tournament. However, their time-traveling adventures lead to unintended and drastic consequences, revisiting key moments from the Harry Potter series and resulting in alternate realities.

The trailer, shared on Instagram by @federico.spoto, imaginatively uses footage of the main cast members of Harry Potter, including Daniel Radcliffe, from their more recent movies intercut with footage from the Harry Potter franchise. With a touch of AI, the trailer intersperses the plot of The Cursed Child throughout. Check it out below.

It is very likely that at some point in the future, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will be made into a movie or TV series, as a ready-made sequel to the magical franchise is not going to be allowed to just sit there on stage forever without it being given a mega-budget make over. For now though, much of the attention on the Harry Potter franchise is on the upcoming TV series that will reboot the story from the beginning.

Although the reception to the news was lukewarm at best, Warner Bros. have laid out their plans to remake the seven novels of J.K. Rowling as a new TV saga, with each season of the show covering a novel each. This will essentially expand the runtime available for each story to between 8–10 hours, compared to the two-hours of the movies. This will certainly allow a more faithful adaptation of the Harry Potter story to be told, but also comes with the massive headache of recasting some of the most iconic roles in recent cinema.

With the journey set to begin again, it could be many years before a movie adaptation of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child becomes a real prospect. In the meantime, we can always rely on more fan pieces to pass the time.
