Former Manchester United defender urges Harry Maguire to give up captaincy

Harry Maguire has been urged to give up the United captaincy next season and get "back to basics" in order to rediscover his best form.

Maguire has faced repeated calls to give up the captain’s armband following a disappointing season. The defender was criticised more than most as United slumped to a sixth-place finish in the Premier League, having been tipped for a title challenge before the 2021/22 campaign.

With Cristiano Ronaldo returning to Old Trafford last summer, many fans feel the Portuguese ace would be a better option as captain. Reports have suggested Maguire will have showdown talks with Erik ten Hag ahead of the new season over his role, with David de Gea and Bruno Fernandes also tipped as potential successors.

Manchester United stance on Dean Henderson replacement

United are open to signing another goalkeeper this summer to offset the expected departure of Dean Henderson.

The 25-year-old remains in talks over a loan move to Nottingham Forest following their return to the Premier League, though there is currently no agreement in place for that proposed deal to include an option to buy.

Henderson has been frustrated by a lack of playing time at Old Trafford and is eager to play regularly next season in order to revive his hopes of making the England squad for the World Cup in Qatar.

United appoint new U23s boss after two coaching exits

Mark Dempsey will take charge of United Under-23s next season after the departure of former head coach Neil Wood to become manager at League Two side Salford City.

Dempsey will remain as senior academy coach but that role will now involve taking charge of the Under-23s side on a matchday, with support from Paul McShane. Travis Binnion is staying as Under-18s lead coach, but he has been promoted to head of player development and coaching at the academy after the departure of Justin Cochrane.

Cochrane has won plaudits for his work at United since joining a year ago and he's now set to take up a first-team coaching role at another Premier League club, believed to be Brentford.
