Harry Maguire to Man Utd: Wayne Rooney’s verdict as United’s transfer pursuit of Leicester star continues

Wayne Rooney has endorsed Manchester United’s pursuit of Harry Maguire.

United are locked in talks with Leicester over a deal for the England international – but have so far refused to meet his valuation of £90m.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is desperate to secure the 26-year-old before next week’s transfer deadline, but has drawn up alternative options, including Kalidou Koulibaly.

Maguire remains his top target and United remain hopeful of agreeing a compromise fee of around £75m plus add-ons.

Former United captain Rooney believes the defender is the right fit for Old Trafford.

"I think Harry's a good player and over the last few years he's improved as a player," he told ESPN FC.

"He's gotten better, and he's been a main player for Leicester City, but also for England. I think he'd be a good signing if they can get him."

United have also opened talks with Juventus over a deal for Paulo Dybala, which could see Romelu Lukaku head in the opposite direction.

Rooney also addressed Paul Pogba’s future after the France international revealed his intention to seek a ‘new challenge’ this summer.

"It's obviously down to the club, to the board, to the manager, but I think also to the player," he said. "If the player wants to stay, he'll stay and prove what a good player he is.

"Behind the scenes, I'm sure they're working on whether to keep him or whether to let him go."
