Harry Maguire to Man Utd or Man City: What we know so far about transfer interest in Leicester defender

Harry Maguire is a wanted man this summer, with both Manchester United and Manchester City seeking to add the Leicester City defender to their squads.

Since signing for Leicester in 2017, Maguire has become a regular international for England as well as one of the most consistent centre-backs in the Premier League.

A fine 2018 World Cup only enhanced his reputation further, and Maguire now looks almost certain to be making a big-money transfer to Manchester during this summer window.

The real question is whether Maguire will be playing in sky blue or red next season - or navy blue for that matter, should he decide to stay with the Foxes.

Here's what we know so far...

Who wants to sign him?

Man Utd and Man City are currently locked in a battle over the England international.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Maguire can help transform his defence alongside Victor Lindelof.

Maguire has overtaken Kalidou Koulibaly as Solskjaer’s primary target in central defence, given the Norwegian’s drive towards domestic talent.

City, meanwhile, are interested in the centre-back following the departure of captain Vincent Kompany.

Is a deal close?

United believe they can again beat City to a key target by securing Maguire.

It is the third time in the last 18 months the Manchester clubs have gone head-to-head in the transfer market.

United succeeded in landing Alexis Sanchez and Fred after both had initially been targeted by Guardiola, though both have spectacularly flopped at Old Trafford.

United are believed to have begun negotiations for the 26-year-old.

How much will he cost?

United's opening offer is believed to have been around the £40m mark, while City are prepared to exceed the £60m they paid Leicester for Riyad Mahrez last summer and could go beyond the £62.6m they are set to spend on Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodri.

But they do have a ceiling, already making it clear to Leicester that they won’t go near the £80m mark. That could still see United have to pay closer to £70m or more to deliver him for Solskjaer.

Ed Woodward entered the summer knowing he was likely to have to twice have to break the club’s transfer record for a defender in one window after targeting Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Maguire. But he has been stunned by the figures being quoted for domestic players.

Both United and City have continued their pursuits of the former Hull player in the belief Leicester will relent.

But it seems certain he will become the most expensive English player of all time – surpassing £49m Raheem Sterling – and could get close to Virgil van Dijk, who cost Liverpool a world-record fee for a defender when signing from Southampton for £75m.

So, which side of Manchester will Maguire end up on?

It is claimed Maguire’s preference is City and the chance to win major honours under Guardiola. But he sparked fresh speculation about his future over the weekend when ‘liking’ a tweet linking him with United.

He later explained it was an accident, but he was convinced he’d join United when they first expressed interest 12 months ago - and Solskjaer will have to hope Old Trafford remains a draw.

United’s concerns about his price mean they have explored the possibility of cheaper alternatives such as West Ham’s Issa Diop.

However, United believe they remain in pole position to sign Maguire.
