Harry Maguire sits out Manchester United training ahead of Europa League final against Villarreal

Harry Maguire looks set to miss Manchester United’s Europa League final against Villarreal after sitting out the team’s final training session in Gdansk.

Maguire suffered ankle ligament damage in the victory over Aston Villa earlier this month and has not featured since, missing United’s last four Premier League games.

The centre-back travelled with the squad to Gdansk and ahead of Tuesday’s session at the Stadion Miejski manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had suggested he would “jog up and down the sideline and “probably try to join in a little”.

However, the 28-year-old played no part, watching his teammates from the dugout as they prepared for the clash with Unai Emery’s side.

Maguire’s absence would be bad news for Gareth Southgate, who earlier named him in his provisional 33-man squad for this summer’s European Championships.

Speaking in his press conference, Southgate put his decision to name an expanded squad down to the uncertainty over the fitness of key players, such as Maguire and Jordan Henderson, as well as the number of England players involved in Wednesday’s game and the Champions League final between Chelsea and Man City on Saturday.

Uncapped centre-backs Ben Godfrey and Ben White are among those to have been called up.
