Harry Maguire sends Manchester United teammates top four message

Harry Maguire wants to see Manchester United become more consistent in order to push into the top four after a convincing win against Newcastle United on Boxing Day.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side put four past Newcastle on Thursday to close the gap on the top four to four points, after Chelsea's defeat to Southampton earlier in the day.

After such a mixed start to the season many had written United off in the race to finish in the Champions League spots but Maguire believes a run of good results could change United's fortunes.

"You've got to put wins and performances together and it's really important you go on runs in this league and we haven't really found that consistency to put three, four, five wins together. It's something we need to work on," Maguire told MUTV after the win. "We're a young group, we're working and there's positives to take from today but now we're focused on Saturday."

United bounced back after the disappointment at Watford with a comfortable win against Newcastle and Solskjaer's side don't have much time to reflect on the victory as they face a trip to Turf Moor on Saturday afternoon. Although Maguire admits the schedule is tough he wasn't complaining about the festive fixture list.

"It's tough. There's no doubt about it. A 90 minute game in the Premier League takes a lot out of you but it's the same for every team," he said. "There might be a few teams out there who get the extra day but it's tough but we have to make our mentality is right going into the game. We're a fit bunch. The boys worked tirelessly in pre-season and this is what it's for. We're fully focused on Saturday."
