Harry Maguire sends Man Utd message to Victor Lindelof and Raphael Varane

Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire believes the arrival of Raphael Varane will help bolster the team's mentality.

The World Cup winning centre-half was presented to the club's fans on Saturday before their win over Leeds.

He completed his long awaited move from Real Madrid and brings with him a wealth of experience.

Both at club level and on the international scene, Varane has been a serial winner.

This United side are yet to taste that winning feeling having fallen short in numerous semi-finals and a final in recent times.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had been seeking to add a defensive partner for Maguire and the England centre-half is excited about Varane's arrival.

"You’ve seen what he’s won over his career," Maguire said, as quoted by the Guardian. "He’s played in some of the top teams about – the French squad and Real Madrid – and he’s won absolutely everything.

"I think he’ll bring that winning mentality and his footballing ability to the club. To bring in players of his calibre is really, really exciting."

"It boosts our defensive options. We’ve got an amazing number of centre-backs now, all internationals who are all proven in the Premier League."

Varane will provide competition for Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly going forward. The former has been Maguire's most regular partner at the back, but will now face a battle for his spot.

The Swede has been inconsistent throughout his Old Trafford career, but showcased some of his better qualities in Saturday's win.

Maguire has now backed him to keep improving as he looks to fend off competition from Varane.

Maguire added: “You’ve seen again how well Victor played. He’s an excellent footballer so to have this number of top centre-backs is great.

"At one of the biggest clubs in the world you don’t expect to have an easy ride and have no competition for places. Bringing in players is great, we thrive off it."

Solskjaer too was thrilled to have captured Varane, whose contract at Madrid was winding down.

The Norwegian believes the Frenchman can positively affected the club's youth products who can bolster their current options.

He said: “I’m absolutely delighted that we have managed to secure one of the best defenders in the world over the last 10 years. Raphaël is a proven winner who we have tracked over a long period of time and we know just how much of a dedicated professional he is.

“We have great depth of international defenders and he will add his immense skill set and leadership to that group. He is a unique defender with a rare combination of top-level attributes that I know will rub off on our younger players.

“He has won everything there is to win but I know that he is still determined to succeed, I can’t wait to welcome him into the squad.”
