Harry Maguire sends Donny van de Beek message after Manchester United captaincy

Harry Maguire has joked with Donny van de Beek after the Dutchman captained Manchester United against Brentford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side played the third game of their pre-season schedule on Wednesday evening when hosting newly-promoted Brentford at Old Trafford and Van de Beek made his return after being ruled out of Holland's Euro 2020 campaign through injury.

United's stars who featured at that tournament have gradually returned to Carrington, although because England reached the final of the competition, Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Maguire are still on their mandatory break from playing.

Maguire is usually United's designated captain, but in his absence, it was Juan Mata who wore the armband on Wednesday.

When the 33-year-old Spaniard was substituted in the latter stages, though, Van de Beek was handed the responsibility.

The Reds' social media posted a picture of Van de Beek with the armband on after the game and Maguire was quick to comment.

"Don’t stretch that armband," Maguire wrote.

United are set to play Preston at the Deepdale Stadium for pre-season next on Saturday, July 31.
