Harry Maguire says Man Utd's critics are just jealous of their success in the past

Harry Maguire claims people want Manchester United to fail "because of the success we've had in the past".

The Red Devils captain also insists he and his teammates face heightened scrutiny because they play for the "biggest club in the world".

The United squad and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have come under fire over the last week after a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal and a 2-1 loss Istanbul Basaksehir.

And skipper Maguire was in the spotlight for the wrong reasons after a spell of poor form for club and country in October.

But the 27-year-old maintains such criticism is expected when playing for a club of United's stature, though he admits it is "difficult for the lads".

"At this club one thing I've noticed in my time here - I've been here a year and a half - is we are the most talked-about club in the world," Maguire said in a video shared by Manchester United's Twitter account.

"Why? Because we are the biggest club in the world. People don't want us to do well. Why? Probably because of the success we've had in the past.

"We have to live up to that, we have to react to it and don't let the negatives get into our bubble inside the training ground. Sometimes it is difficult for the lads."

Maguire was impressive in United's 3-1 win at Everton on Saturday and he is now determined to put together a winning run after a period of inconsistency.

"We reacted well to two poor results. We felt we were on the right track after [the 5-0 win over] Leipzig and we let ourselves down against Arsenal.

"It wasn't good enough as a performance. In the week again we gave them a soft goal and found it too hard to create chances to come back.

"We knew this was an important game to get three points. We reacted well but it is only a start."
