Harry Maguire's former Hull City team-mate weighs in on Manchester United transfer saga

Nottingham Forest centre-back Michael Dawson reckons Harry Maguire's prospective transfer away from Leicester City to Manchester United or Manchester City is a matter of when and not if.

Dawson played with Maguire at Hull before the England international's departure for City two years ago, with former Tottenham Hotspur defender Dawson joining Forest a year later.

Maguire has been heavily linked with a move away from City both this summer and last.

United were said to be keen on the 26-year-old before last season kicked-off, with Leicester moving to tie him down to a fresh long-term deal to fend off any interest.

Now this summer Pep Guardiola's side are also interested, with Leicester receiving two bids earlier this summer that have been knocked back.

The club's owners, the King Power group, are believed to want more than the current world-record for a defender - £75 million paid for Virgil van Dijk in January 2018.

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers told LeicestershireLive after the 2-1 win at Stoke City on Saturday that the club were relaxed about the situation with the transfer window set to close on August 8.

But Dawson reckons a deal is not far away.

"Leicester have had him for two years and he's had the opportunity to have the England career he's having at the moment," he told Sky Sports News.

"He'll be there for many years because he's a top-class player.

"When the deal does happen, and you think it will happen now with the figures that are being bandied around, you're going to wonder how Leicester do turn it down.

"How can you stop a player like Harry, what he's done for them, to go and play for a team like Manchester United, a massive football club?"
