Harry Maguire ruthlessly mocked in Ghana parliament as MP uses Man Utd ace for comparison

A member of the Ghanaian parliament has ruthlessly mocked Harry Maguire as he compared his country's vice president to the Manchester United star.

Isaac Adongo is a member of parliament aligned to the opposition National Democratic Congress party. The chamber began debating the 2023 budget on Wednesday, with the NDC alleging that the economy had been mishandled by the ruling New Patriotic Party.

And as way to attack the NPP's Mahamudu Bawumia, who serves as vice president and was formerly Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Adongo brought up Maguire. The defender has experienced a brutal loss of form for United, which Adongo highlighted.

"If you are a fan of football, and I was happy to see the jubilation when Ghana won, but there was a player in the United Kingdom, in England called Maguire who was playing for Manchester United," Adongo told the Ghana parliament.

" Harry Maguire, he's a defender. He was tackling everybody and throwing his body everywhere. He was seen as the best defender in the world, Manchester United were at the bottom.

"He became the biggest threat at the centre of the Manchester United defence, tackling Manchester players and giving assists to opponents. Mr Speaker, when you see the opponents go to score, Maguire will score for them."

Adongo then used Maguire's downturn in form to compare him to Bawumia, who he accused of mismanaging the economy. He branded him an "economic Maguire" as he slammed the vice president.

"Mr Speaker, you remember in this country we also have an economic Maguire. This economic Maguire, we're clapping saying this man is the best in managing foreign terms," Adongo said.

"The same economic Maguire was at Central University delivering lectures on how to restore the value of the Cedi. Mr Speaker why we gave this Maguire the opportunity to be at the centre of our defence, he became the rest of our own goals.

"Why he thought he was the best in capital opportunity, he moved us to 40.4. Why at that time he was the best at managing the recession at nine per cent, he moved it to 54 per cent. Mr Speaker the biggest issue is now is that when we pay the appearance fee for this Maguire."

Only 30 of the ruling party's MPs turned up for the debate as they were slammed by Adongo and his colleagues. Maguire meanwhile is currently featuring for England at the World Cup in Qatar.

The defender is impressing for the Three Lions, starting every game as Gareth Southgate's side qualified for the Last 16. He will hope to bring that form back to United, where he has fallen down the pecking order under boss Erik ten Hag. He will likely start again on Sunday when England face Senegal in their first knockout match. France or Poland will await the winner in the quarter-finals.
