Harry Maguire responds to Man Utd captaincy blunder before Partizan Belgrade clash

Harry Maguire responded to his captaincy blunder prior to Manchester United's Europa League clash at Partizan Belgrade by saying: "Let me off!"

Maguire was left red-faced after he seemingly forgot the coin toss after the pre-match pleasantries in Serbia.

The referee was forced to call him over where he then swapped pennants with the Partizan skipper.

It was the first time Maguire had captained the Red Devils since his £70million switch to Old Trafford in the summer - and his first appearance in European club competition.

Anthony Martial's penalty gave United a 1-0 win after youngster Brandon Williams had been fouled in the penalty area.

And after the game Maguire tweeted: "Last time I did this you did the coin toss in the centre circle. It's been a long time. Let me off."

Maguire spoke of his pride at leading out United - and claiming the three points which leaves them top of their group with two wins and a draw so far having yet to concede a goal.

"It's a massive honour to lead the team out, especially such a big club like United," he told BT Sport. "I'm really proud, but more importantly I'm happy we got the clean sheet and the three points.

"It was really important to get the away win - it's been a long time coming. We weren't at our best and it was scrappy at times, but we always knew our first away win would be one we had to grind out."
