Harry Maguire on the "strange" area Man Utd need to improve despite perfect away record

Harry Maguire is keen for Manchester United to stop conceding first in away matches despite his side's impressive record of coming from behind to win on the road.

The Red Devils recovered from 2-0 down at half-time to beat Southampton 3-2 in the Premier League on Sunday thanks to Bruno Fernandes' strike and Edinson Cavani's double.

The victory at St Mary's maintained United's 100 per cent record in away Premier League games this season - though the Red Devils fell behind in each of those matches.

United's run of away wins also extends to last season and they have claimed three points in all eight of their last Premier League fixtures on the road.

But Maguire is desparate for United to start on the front foot rather than rely on comeback victories.

The Red Devils captain told MUTV : “Well, I didn't know that. I think it says we need to start scoring the first goal to give us a bit of help! It's a strange stat to hear.

“I actually don’t think we are starting games badly. Everton, we started the game really well. [Against Southampton ], we started really well.

“We are conceding bad goals at bad moments, maybe, but we are showing great resilience, spirit and character, which is something this squad has in abundance.

“We work tirelessly on the training pitch, we want to do so well for this club, we want to be a success, we want to win trophies and that is what it's about at this club.

"So, when we don't do that, we need to drive for more. It comes from hunger and spirit. It's a strange stat, but it does show great character.”

United's next Premier League fixture sees them travel to the London Stadium on Saturday to face West Ham.
