Harry Maguire on how Manchester United can repeat Tottenham trick to spark life into season

Harry Maguire is hoping another trip to Tottenham Hotspur can be the spark to breathe new life into Manchester United’s flailing season.

United have enjoyed their visits to North London over the years, and last season’s trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in particular proved to be one to savour.

Having been thrashed 6-1 by Spurs at Old Trafford earlier in the campaign, the visitors looked as though they were in for another frustrating afternoon when Edinson Cavani had a goal controversially ruled out before Son Heung-min gave Tottenham the lead.

United though fought back in style, with second half goals from Fred, Cavani and Mason Greenwood wrapping up a 3-1 victory as they gained revenge for their heavy defeat at home.

Having banished those demons last season, they’ll be hoping they can do something similar this time around as they head into Saturday’s game off the back of their humiliating 5-0 defeat to Liverpool.

Reflecting on last season’s trip to North London, Maguire told United’s website : "Yeah it was quite an entertaining game and a great game to be involved in and it was an important result for us.

“It really kicked us on again in the season and we’ve had some good games over there in recent years.

“We know it will be a tough game, they’re a top team, but like I say we’ve got to focus on ourselves and this is what this week has been about.

“We’re not really focusing on the opposition, it’s all about ourselves and how to improve and get a performance on Saturday to put smiles back our fans’ faces as that’s what they deserve."

United, and in particular Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have an awful lot to prove as they head to Tottenham, who sit just a point ahead of them in the Premier League table.

Spurs themselves have been far from convincing, with boss Nuno Espirito Santo having also faced questions over his position, adding more incentive for both dugouts.

"Yeah of course it’s an important game, it’s a football match in the Premier League playing for Manchester United,” Maguire added.

“It’s not really about looking at the table and seeing where they are in the table, it’s all about going there and getting three points and that’s what this club is all about.

“Every game you play in you’re expected to get three points. But first and foremost we owe ourselves a good performance.

“We’re together as a unit and we’re together as a team, and we want to give the fans a performance to be proud of and the result will look after itself."
