Harry Maguire names two ex-Manchester United stars as childhood idols

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has revealed two ex-Reds were his childhood idols growing up.

Maguire completed an £80 million move to Old Trafford from Leicester City in the summer of 2019 and called it "a dream come true" at the time. He has since gone on to captain the club, leading the side to second place in the Premier League last season and a Europa League final, which he missed through injury.

Now representing England at Euro 2020, the Sheffield-born star spoke with Reds legend Gary Neville prior to the tournament in a video for his YouTube channel 'The Overlap'.

During a round of quick-fire questions, Neville asked Maguire who his childhood idols were and Maguire responded by naming two former Manchester United megastars.

"When I was 16, when I turned into a defender it was more Rio [Ferdinand] and John Terry. When I was a child, I'd probably go with David Beckham."

The 28-year-old has spoken in the past of his admiration for Ferdinand as someone he modelled his game on, hence his ability to play out from the back.

Ferdinand spent 12 seasons at Old Trafford and won six Premier League titles, two League Cups and a UEFA Champions League title during his time there. If Maguire can earn even half of those honours then he can call himself a success.
