Harry Maguire Man City's 'No. 1 choice to replace Vincent Kompany' and more transfer gossip

Following the departure of beloved captain Vincent Kompany, Man City manager Pep Guardiola has made Harry Maguire his 'No.1 choice' to replace the centre-back.

Kompany announced his shock departure after 11 years at City on Sunday following winning the FA Cup final on Saturday and becoming the first captain in England to lift a domestic treble.

He will return to his boyhood club Anderlecht on a three year contract as a player-manager.

Kompany has played a major part in City's championship winning run in this season, starting the last five games in a row and scoring a sensational winning goal in pivotal circumstances against Leicester.

The Belgian's quality at the back and leadership qualities will certainly need replacing this summer and as a result City are being linked with new centre-backs.

The Daily Mail reports that City 'will press ahead with attempts to sign' Leicester City's popular defender Maguire.

It's claimed that Guardiola 'lavished him [Maguire] with praise' following his performance against City at the Etihad but it could take a 'world-record fee' to sign him.

Leicester are notoriously tough negotiators, as City discovered in their pursuit of Riyad Mahrez, and it's reported that the cost may have to 'eclipse' the current record paid by Liverpool to Southampton for Virgil van Dijk due to Maguire's 'age and nationality.'

It's claimed that the Foxes 'don't want to sell Maguire' and are under no obligation to as the 26-year-old signed a new contract in the summer until 2023.

Meanwhile, Man City are one of the clubs showing 'immense' interest in Swedish starlet Benjamin Nygren.

The 17-year-old is rated extremely highly in his homeland, with his manager at IFK Gothenburg recently saying that "the expectations for Nygren are higher than for Zlatan Ibrahimovic at the same age."

The young winger has already made an impact for his side, scoring four goals and assisting just as many in nine games, with his side currently four points off the top of the table with a game in hand.

According to HLN, Belgium champions Genk want Nygren as a 'replacement' to their own starlet Leandro Trossard who is expected to depart the club.

It's reported that Genk want to be 'brief' and get the deal for Nygren done as 'the interest in Nygren is immense' with City, Bayern Munich, PSG, Inter and Ajax all named as teams that are following the Swede.
