Harry Maguire issues Gareth Southgate plea following Euro 2020 disappointment

Harry Maguire says "ruthless" Gareth Southgate deserves to lead England to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after doing an "amazing job" with the national team up to now.

The 28-year-old missed the opening two group games this summer as he continued his recovery from an ankle injury which brought a premature end to his domestic season.

He returned to help England reach the Wembley showpiece, where they were defeated 3-2 on penalties by eventual champions Italy after the match finished one goal apiece.

As the dust continues to settle on their heartbreaking Euro 2020 final defeat, the Three Lions will soon turn their attentions to the resumption of the qualifying campaign for the first ever winter World Cup.

But the Manchester United captain is desperate to achieve more on the international stage with Southgate at the helm.

"To reach the final of Euro 2020 is a great achievement, but we now have to take that next step and be convincing in these big games and these big moments," Maguire said.

"I think Gareth has done an amazing job and deserves the credit, and deserves another opportunity."

Maguire added: "I think the way Gareth handles the squad, and the togetherness of the squad, is a big reason why we have been on this journey together and where we have ended up.

"The relationship we have got from fans to players, to media and the staff.

"I think we feel we are all on this journey together and that is really important. We all want the same thing.

"The past has made it difficult to do that, due to the small number of knock-out games we had won. We had not won enough. Over the last two tournaments we have done that.

"I think he can be ruthless. He has that side to him. He makes big decisions and is not scared of anything."
