Harry Maguire gives honest verdict on Jordan Pickford penalty incident in Man United vs Everton

Harry Maguire admitted he did not think he should have been given a penalty in Manchester United's win over Everton.

Maguire saw appeals for a spot-kick waved away in the second half of United's 3-1 victory at Goodison Park, which came via two goals from Bruno Fernandes and a late Edinson Cavani strike.

Referee Paul Tierney did not give Maguire a penalty after an alleged foul by Jordan Pickford in the box and the VAR officials agreed with the on-field decision after a brief check.

And Maguire believed he fouled Pickford in the build-up to the incident, as he said in a post match interview with MUTV after the win.

“I just explained this in there, I personally don’t think it was [a penalty],” said the United captain.

“I think maybe I fouled Jordan first. I did put a hand into his chest when he went to catch the ball and I did feel contact on my knee.

“I felt like I probably pushed Jordan before and I know everyone’s probably trying to jump on him dropping the ball but I did feel like I pushed him. I’d say [a penalty] would have been a little bit soft.”

United did not need the penalty as Fernandes' Man Of The Match performance inspired them to a vital victory, which takes the pressure off boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The majority of the United squad now head out on international duty with no club games for a fortnight.
