Alan Shearer has told Harry Kane that this summer will be decisive when it comes to his Tottenham future.

Kane has been tipped to push to leave Spurs if they miss out on Champions League football for a second consecutive season, although the club insist he is not for sale at any price.

"I’ve got way too much respect for Harry as a player and a man to offer him advice on a decision that I know for myself is rarely linear and that may not, in the end, be his to make,” Shearer wrote in a column for The Athletic.

“What I would say, though, is this: if he’s going to leave, it looks like this summer or not at all.”

Shearer never won a major trophy after moving to boyhood club Newcastle but is the Premier League's all-time top scorer with 260 goals – a record Kane is chasing.

The former England striker says he regrets none of his career choices but concedes that Kane may want more.

"The great players do not settle," Shearer added. "They always want more and they push for it. And Harry is a great player, which is why it feels like he and Spurs are approaching a moment of definition.

“Whether it means staying or going, will they give him what he wants?"
