Harry Kane sends Premier League Golden Boot message to Erling Haaland and Darwin Nunez

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane is relishing the challenge that both Erling Haaland and Darwin Nunez will pose in the race for the Premier League Golden Boot next term.

The England captain heads into next season aiming to become just the second player alongside Thierry Henry to have claimed the award on four separate occasions. He was the league’s top goalscorer most recently at the end of the 2020/21 season as his 23 goals secured the award.

Kane was not quite able to retain the title last term though, with Tottenham teammate Heung-Min Son and Mohamed Salah having shared the Golden Boot. The competition is likely to get even more severe next season with Darwin Nunez and Erling Haaland set to arrive.

The latter is highly likely to spearhead Manchester City ’s attack next term after Pep Guardiola’s men secured a £51m deal for the Norwegian’s services. Elsewhere, Benfica striker Nunez could potentially become Liverpool ’s record signing - with the Reds close to sealing a deal.

However, Kane has said that he is looking forward to battling with the pair for the title of the leading goalscorer in the English top-flight next year. Speaking in a press conference ahead of England’s Nations League showdown with Hungary, he said: “I think the battle for the golden boot is always tough. The Premier League has produced some top strikers around the world for a number of years now.

“Every season I’ve been playing, it’s always been a tough battle to win that Golden Boot. It’s no different. You expect the top strikers to want to play in the Premier League. Like I say, with those two new signings, that’s going to be the case.

“I think it helps. It helps me as a player to have good competition. It drives me to improve and good better and for sure, I look forward to the challenge.”

Haaland and Nunez of course are set to arrive in the Premier League off the back of prolific seasons for their former clubs. After harnessing the reputation as one of the most lethal strikers in Europe with Red Bull Salzburg, Haaland plundered a further 29 goals in 30 appearances last season with Borussia Dortmund.

Uruguayan striker Nunez found the net on 34 occasions for Benfica - a total that ironically includes two goals against his future employers. He scored in both legs of the Portuguese giants’ Champions League quarter-final clash with the Reds.

Elsewhere, whilst Kane endured a slow start to the campaign in north London, he still managed to find the back of the net 27 times in all competitions last term - 17 of those coming in the Premier League.
