Tottenham striker Harry Kane has insisted that Tottenham need to start the season strongly if they wish to challenge Manchester City and Liverpool for the Premier League title this season.
The England captain bagged two late goals to ensure that Spurs took their first three points of the season against newly promoted Aston Villa on Saturday.
The game didn't get off to a good start for Mauricio Pochettino's men, when John McGinn's 9th minute strike put the visitors ahead, and the Midlands team kept that lead until debutant Tanguy Ndombele scored the equaliser in the 73rd minute. Kane completed the turnaround by scoring two late goals to give Spurs a 3-1 victory.
Tottenham are seen by some as the team most likely to challenge last season's Champions Man City and runners up Liverpool for the title this campaign, despite finishing 26 points behind the second placed Reds in the 2018/19 season.
Kane has said that a good start in the league is vital in order to keep up with their Premier League rivals.
"We kept up with them for a while last year but they blew ahead after January," Kane told the BBC after the victory against Aston Villa.
"We have to make sure we get off to a good start. Liverpool set the standard on Friday night and City before us, so it's important that we stay in touch as long as we can.
"We have full belief that we can go all the way but there's a long road ahead and we've got to be fully focused."
Should they make a play for the title this season, Tottenham will have to hope to take points off their rivals in the race, and they will have the first chance to do so when they face Manchester City on Saturday (17th August, 5:30 KO).
